As you are watching the videos, you will write down five questions you have. These can include things you are confused about or things you would like to know more about.
You will then watch three additional videos on National Geographic individually.
Click on "Environment" and then click on "Natural Disasters."
Click on "Earthquakes" to watch the videos "Earthquakes 101" and "Inside Earthquakes."
Click on "Volcanoes" to watch the video "Mt. Etna Volcanologist"
While watching the videos, write down five questions you have from the videos. These could be about things you are confused about or things you would like to know more about.
Type up these questions in a document using Microsoft Word.
Next, use the Internet to research the answers to your questions. Avoid using websites that are not reliable sources with credited authors, such as Wikipedia. You may also use your textbooks, encyclopedias, or other books.
Type the answers to your questions on Microsoft Word, print out the document, and put it in your science notebook.
You may take the quiz as many times as you would like and can use the internet, notes, and textbooks as aides. When you are satisfied with your results, you will send them to me by entering my email address on the bottom where it says "Instructor."
Day 2: Theory of Plate Tectonics
Today you will be working individually on a webquest to increase your understanding of the theory of plate tectonics.
You may take the quiz as many times as you would like and can use the internet, notes, and textbooks as aides. When you are satisfied with your results, you will send them to me by entering my email address on the bottom where it says "Instructor."
Day 3: Earthquakes
Today you will use an interactive lab on the National Geographic website to learn more about earthquakes.
Use the numbers at the top of the page to navigate through all 6 pages of the lab.
As you read through the information on page one through six, copy and paste all of the words in bold onto a Word document. Then use your own words to define these vocabulary words.
Print this document out and put it in your science notebook.
The last page of the lab is an earthquake simulation. Here, you will :
Create three different earthquake simulations. Select a different ground type for each simulation (bedrock, fault zone, and landfill).
Type one paragraph, on Microsoft Word, about each simulation describing the settings you selected, what happened, and why it happened.
Print this out and put it in your science notebook.
You may take the quiz as many times as you would like and can use the internet, notes, and textbooks as aides. When you are satisfied with your results, you will send them to me by entering my email address on the bottom where it says "Instructor."
Day 4: Volcanoes
Today's activities will closely resemble yesterday's. You will use an interactive lab on the National Geographic website to learn more about volcanoes.
Click on the image of a volcano at the top of the page to get to the volcano section of the lab
Use the numbers at the top of the page to navigate through all 6 pages of the lab.
As you read through the information on page one through six, copy and paste all of the words in bold onto a Word document. Then use your own words to define these vocabulary words.
Print this document out and put it in your science notebook.
The last page of the lab is a volcano simulation. Here, you will :
Create four different volcano simulations. Select a different type of volcano for each simulation (shield, composite, cinder cone, and lava dome).
Day 5: Conclusion
Today you will work in assigned groups of three to create a PowerPoint presentation about what you have learned throughout the week.
The focus will be on answering the question, "What is the relationship between volcanoes, earthquakes, and plate-tectonics?"
The presentation should be:
6-10 slides long
Include information from textbooks, the internet, and your science notebooks
Include at least 3 graphics
Have font that is easy-to read and in bullet points
Have correct spelling and grammar
You will have until the end of class to finish your presentation.
You will save your presentation to the computer using your group number.
At the end of class I will come around to collect your science notebooks.
Day 2: Theory of Plate Tectonics
- Today you will be working individually on a webquest to increase your understanding of the theory of plate tectonics.
- First, print out the webquest from this site:
